2023 Chenin Blanc

Grape: Chenin Blanc
Vineyard: Diounne's Vineyard
166 cases produced

Winemaker Notes: 2023 saw a great growing season for Chenin Blanc in Lake Chelan. The Chenin Blanc crop was not as damaged by the freeze of 2022 as we initially thought and we ended up with a decent crop at Diounne's Vineyard. We hand-harvested the fruit on September 9, 2023 and it came in at 23 brix and 3.18 ph. The grapes were whole cluster pressed and then the juice was fermented in stainless steel until dry. This is an acid-driven wine that exemplifies what expressive white wines can be from the Lake Chelan AVA.

Previous Vintage Review: 93 points, "Critic's Choice" from Sean Sullivan, Northwest Wine Report
Aged in stainless steel, reductive aromas are in the lead initially, with notes of struck flint. Beyond that are aromas of yellow and green apple, melon, and herb. Medium-bodied, exquisitely balanced, very varietal flavors follow. Tart, bright acidity keeps it all in vivid focus. It’s a complete standout – a statement on what Lake Chelan white wines can be.

2023 Grüner Veltliner

Grape: Grüner Veltliner
Vineyard: High Blossom
Maturation: Stainless Steel Tank

12.4% ABV

Aromas - Lime Pith • Candied Lemon Peel • Key Lime Pie
Palate - Crushed Granite • White Pepper • Cucumber

100 cases produced

93pts, Clive Pursehouse, Decanter
Rich and opulent, this high elevation Grüner comes from nearly 600m beside Lake Chelan. Rich nutty aromatics are met with apricot flesh and hints of tarragon. The palate is fleshy and rich; almond skin, ripe yellow peach flesh, and honeyed stone fruits are brightened and lifted by ample acidity and a spine of stony minerality.

92 pts, Paul Gregutt
A December ’22 deep freeze cut the ’23 crop in half. But the half that survived produced some splendid wines. This is lively, mineral-drenched, beautifully textured and expressive. Citrus zest – lemon, lime and grapefruit – is on parade here. The clarity and freshness make this a standout. Drink it young and chilled. 130 cases; 12.4%; $28 (Lake Chelan) 92/100

2023 Sandstone Grüner Veltliner

Varietal: Grüner Veltliner
Vineyard: High Blossom
Vintage: 2023

119 cases produced

Winemaker Notes: 2023 was a beautiful growing season that was unfortunately defined by the deep freeze that occurred in December 2022. With temperatures dipping to -10 F for a sustained period at our High Blossom Estate Vineyard we knew that we would see bud damage and crop loss. In the Grüner Veltliner Block we saw about a 50% loss. We hand picked the Grüner on September 7, 2023 at 22.5 brix and 3.38 ph. We whole-cluster pressed the grapes and cold-settled the juice in stainless steel before racking into our sandstone Jarre and fermenting until dry. The wine aged for 4 months in sandstone before it was filtered and bottled.

Previous Vintage Reviews:

A wonderful Grüner Veltliner with such savoury deliciousness from the Lake Chelan AVA, from the estate High Blossom Vineyard. Briny saline marks the aromas and is followed on by savoury herbs and Keffir lime leaf. The palate is sleek and fresh, smoky savoury character with streaks of flint, tangy smoked lemon peel and a loads of citrus carry the finish.

2022 Riesling Reinlese

Grape: Riesling
Vineyard: High Blossom
10.4% ABV

This 100% Riesling is made in an off-dry style with 30g/L residual sugar and high acidity, creating a complexity that pairs well with any food, and particularly well with spicy Asian dishes and fatty meats and cheeses. "Reinlese"=pure harvest in German, a name we are using to pay tribute to the Atams, who planted our Riesling vineyard in 2003.

94pts, Paul Gregutt
It’s been described by winemaker Travis Clark as “a lean, fruit-forward, acid-driven Malbec that could only come from the 2022 vintage.” But it’s more than that. It’s tight, focused, lean (in a good way) but in no way is it thin or lacking in flavor. It’s steely, brambly, reserved, but punchy with blueberry/blackberry fruit, a seam of espresso, and framing ripe tannins. A tour de force from the grape, the site, the vintage and of course the winemaker. For me, it’s the style that works best. 220 cases; 13.4%; $39  (Lake Chelan) 94/100

91pts, Critic's Choice, Sean Sullivan, Northwest Wine Report
This is an early look at a red wine from this vintage, fermented and aged in 20HL concrete tank. It’s light in color for this typically fully saturated, purple-rimmed variety. Rather, its color bears more resemblance to a Grenache. The aromas offer notes of cigar box, orange rind, red plum, and kisses of raspberry. The palate is lighter-bodied, fresh and piercingly pure, made in a drink-now, glugable, flat-out delicious style. Forget what you think you know about Malbec and just enjoy.

2021 Merlot

Grape: Merlot
Vineyard: Block '14, Block '98
Aged 28 months in new and neutral oak

Winemaker Notes: This is a monster merlot. 2021's heat allowed us to fully ripen our Merlot in both the 14 block and 98 block to perfection. The fruit came in at 26 brix and a 3.7 ph with fully ripe tannins and strong dark fruit. We hand-harvested, sorted and destemed the merlot and then fermented it in open top fermentors and aged it in new and neutral french oak for 28 months. When blending this merlot I was pleasantly surprised to find barrel after barrel of strong and structured wine.

Reviews:

91 points, Critic’s Choice, Sean Sullivan, Northwest Wine Report
100% varietal, this wine was aged 28 months in new and neutral French oak. The aromas are effusive, with notes of raspberry compote, plum, gummy candy, and dried herb. Rich, lush flavors follow. There’s a vein of acidity running through it that ups the interest. 15.1% alcohol. TCA-free micro-agglomerated cork. 255 cases produced.
